Date: 10th April 2014. Venue: Compass Theatre. Report by: Tony Austin
“The program says that Daniel Benisty who played Tito Merelli had never been in a musical before, which I find almost unbelievable. A perfect grand manner and a glorious tenor delivering authentic Italian lyrics may have been used in recitals, but a wonderfully maintained Italian accent for his speaking voice, superb timing of lines, facial expressions to enhance every situation (plus the stirring of Max’s wineglass with his finger to copy what seemed to him a “strange American practice”), as well as chasing round in an Al Jolson costume during the second Act were something different. His Facciamo L’Amor, the quarrelling duet with his wife was superbly funny (thanks for the translation issued beforehand!) and his properly OTT send- up of body-loosening exercises in preparation for Max’s singing lesson was perfectly judged. Another brilliant performance”
